Social work is a helping and an enabling profession. The main purpose of social work is to improve a society’s overall well-being, especially for the most vulnerable populations. Social workers do not limit their work to individuals only; but they also work with families, groups, neighborhoods, communities, and organizations. Social work practice is strengths-based. Social workers assist people or groups identify their problems, determine their skills and capacities, what they are doing well, and how that was accomplished, and then analyze ways that those strengths might be applied to the identified problems.
Although social work is yet to get its professional recognition in Bangladesh, the practice of social work is noticeable in both government and non-government agencies. There are some important areas in Bangladesh where practices social work including medical health setting, psychiatric setting, correctional setting, developmental setting, women and child welfare setting, counseling setting, youth welfare setting, etc. In this connection the Department of Social Work was establised at UITS in 2013 under the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
The Department envisions becoming a leading department of choice and preparing students for a wide range of social work roles from therapist and case manager to community organizer and administrator.
The mission of the Department is to make social engineers who will enhance human well-being and meet the basic human needs of the people with particular attention to the people who are physically and mentally vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty.
